Thanks for visiting our team page for the 28th annual (and final) AIDS Walk Buffalo taking place Saturday, May 4 at Hoyt Lake in Delaware Park.
The event is a 5K walk that benefits Evergreen Health (formerly AIDS Community Services) a non-profit agency that fosters healthy communities by providing medical, supportive, and behavioral services to individuals and families in Western New York- especially those who are living with chronic illness or who are underserved by the healthcare system. I am excited to be able to support an effort that does such critical work in our community.
Our involvement with this extraordinary organization and cause emanates from personal experience. In 1989, at the age of 15, I learned that my Uncle Jimmie "JR" Thompson was HIV positive. I remember my parents sharing this information with me in the most gentle and loving manner possible, and how crushing it felt - the person that I loved and admired most in the world was going to be taken from me, horribly.
During the intervening years, my hero's health declined and he moved from San Francisco to live with us in Buffalo, where we could care for and love him. This was simultaneously one of the greatest and most painful periods of our lives. Jimmie knew, and we all believed, that eventually HIV would become a treatable chronic disease - and while our efforts in the early 1990s could not extend his life, his impact on us continues to translate into our efforts to help and support others diagnosed with HIV and other chronic illnesses. HIV is now a treatable condition. HIV is now understood to impact all of us. HIV is not a shameful subject.
As a family, we are privileged to serve Evergreen Health Services and the incredible people who work and volunteer to further Evergreen's mission throughout WNY. This year, in asking for your financial support of Evergreen through our participation in AIDS Walk Buffalo, I am sharing some of our personal story. I welcome your support, including any interest in joining our team and participating in this year's AIDS Walk. We walk to honor Jimmie, Evergreen's staff and volunteers, and the impactful mission that inspires their work each day.
You can show your support by joining this team, making a donation on this page or to one of the team registered participants or even just showing up to cheer us on.
Thank you for your support!
